Across the Chao Phraya River, Wat Pho Bang O whispers tales of a time before Bangkok’s bustling streets. Wat Pho Bang O existed even before King Rama I established Bangkok as the capital. Its original name, Wat Photaram or Podharam, echoes the monastery of the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, where Buddha reached enlightenment. The exact origins of Wat Pho Bang O remain shrouded in mystery, lost to the passage of time. It’s believed to have been built sometime during the Ayutthaya period, possibly expanded during King Phetracha’s reign (1688–1703). Wat Pho Bang O’s location near the royal palace during King Taksin’s rule in Thonburi elevated it to the status of a royal monastery. When King Rama I moved the capital to Bangkok, Wat Pho Bang O’s proximity to the Grand Palace solidified its royal connection. In 1788, he ordered the dilapidated temple’s reconstruction. This massive undertaking involved draining and filling the marshy land. It also included a remarkable project: gathering Buddha images from abandoned temples across Thailand, including Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, and bringing them to Wat Pho Bang O. The temple was renamed Wat Phra Chetuphon Vimolmangklavas upon its completion in 1801. The reign of King Rama III (1824-1851) saw further transformation. He expanded the temple grounds, rebuilt many structures, and established it as a public center of learning. The walls were adorned with inscriptions on various subjects, penned by scholars and monks, including Supreme Patriarch Prince Paramanuchitchinorot. These inscriptions are now recognized by UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme. Wat Pho Bang O stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith, knowledge, and royal patronage. It served as a medical teaching center before modern medicine, and continues to be a hub for traditional Thai massage. Its history is interwoven with the story of Bangkok itself, a quiet witness to the city’s rise and evolution.
