Wat Phan Thai Norasing is more than just a historical park. It is a reminder of a man who valued the law above his own life. Phanthai Norasing was a coxswain during the Ayutthaya period. He served King Sanphet VIII. One fateful day in 1704, tragedy struck.
The royal barge “Ekkachai” met with an accident. It was during a boat trip on the winding Khok Kham canal. Phanthai Norasing could not prevent the barge from hitting an overhanging tree branch. The royal law was clear. Such negligence was punishable by death.
King Sanphet VIII offered Phanthai Norasing a pardon. However, Phanthai Norasing refused. He insisted that the law must be respected. He believed that no one should be exempt from it. The king had no choice but to order his execution.
The king later ordered a shrine to be built. It was in memory of Phanthai Norasing. It honored the man who sacrificed himself for the law. The site where he was beheaded is now the Phanthai Norasing Historical Park.

After the execution, King Sanphet VIII ordered the excavation of the Mahachai Canal. This was to honor Phanthai Norasing’s integrity. It also improved water transportation.
