Marvelous Wat Phai Lueang isn’t it? This magnificent temple complex boasts a rich history. It stands as a testament to centuries of devotion and architectural brilliance. Wat Phai Lueang began its life during the reign of King Jayavarman VII. He ruled the Khmer Empire from 1181 to around 1219. Three stunning prang towers formed the heart of the Khmer city. These towers featured intricate stucco decorations. Imagine the bustling market nearby. The Ramkhamhaeng Inscription mentions it. The inscription also notes the Phra Achana Buddha image nearby coconut groves and villages.

Later the Thais took control of the area. They transformed Wat Phai Lueang into a Theravada Buddhist temple. They added assembly and ordination halls. These additions reflected the distinct Sukhothai architectural style. The original three prang towers were constructed of laterite. Only the northern prang survives intact today. The other two sadly collapsed. The surviving northern prang displays beautiful stucco work. This work features both Buddhist and Hindu themes. It shows how seamlessly different religious styles blended in the past.

The largest of the towers originally stood on a laterite base. Archeologists believe that it may lie a meter underground now. Each prang had an entrance to the east. These entrances were flanked by pillars. They supported richly ornamented tympana. These panels depicted scenes from the life of the Buddha. Note the striking floral flourishes that framed them. Many of these original pieces are now in the Ramkhamhaeng National Museum.

The Thais also built a large wihan close to the prangs. They built a mondop too. This mondop features impressive standing and walking Buddha reliefs. It dates from the 15th century. A large square stupa sits between the wihan and the mondop. It has Buddha niches around its base. These structures mainly consist of bricks. Some laterite was reused from Khmer buildings.

Wat Phai Lueang is surrounded by two moats. The outer one measures 600 meters on each side. It is fed by the Lam Pan River. The remains of an assembly hall and a small ordination hall lie between the moats. Eight boundary stones mark the ordination hall. Wat Phai Lueang’s story intertwines Khmer and Thai cultures. It is a must-see testament to Thailand’s rich artistic and religious legacy. Don’t miss it.
