In the heart of Bangkok’s bustling Chinatown stands Wat Pathum Khongkha Ratchaworawihan. It’s a beacon of peace amidst the vibrant chaos. Don’t let the tranquility fool you though. Wat Pathum Khongkha Ratchaworawihan holds centuries of history, some serene and some surprisingly somber. This beautiful temple, known more simply as Wat Pathum Khongkha, dates back to the Ayutthaya period. It earned its current name during the reign of King Rama I. His brother, Prince Maha Sura Singhanat, led a complete restoration of the temple. He dedicated this act of merit to their father, Thongdee. Interestingly, the temple was previously known as Wat Sampheng. The name reflected its location within Sampheng, a historical hub for Chinese merchants. Wat Pathum Khongkha holds a dark secret as well. It once served as an execution ground. Prince Kraisorn, who dared to rebel against King Rama III, met his tragic end here. He was punished according to ancient traditions reserved for royalty: death by beating with a sandalwood cudgel. Look closely and you can still see the execution stone on the temple grounds, a stark reminder of the past. But Wat Pathum Khongkha also houses beauty and serenity. The ordination hall, built with traditional brick and mortar, is home to a striking Buddha statue. This statue, adorned in royal attire, depicts the Buddha overcoming temptation. This image, known as Phra Phuttha Mahachanok, is a powerful symbol of spiritual strength. Before you leave, take a moment to appreciate the intricate details of the temple. Notice the lacquered gold leaf paintings adorning the sermon hall’s doors and windows, a testament to the temple’s rich artistry. Wat Pathum Khongkha Ratchaworawihan is a place where peace and turmoil intertwine, a testament to the enduring spirit of Bangkok.
