Wat Pa Bong is also known as Wat Mank Kalaram. This temple is celebrated for its peaceful atmosphere and unique features. It might be small. But it has a special draw for visitors.

The large gong in the courtyard is a highlight. Visitors are encouraged to strike it three times. This is said to bring happiness, health, and peace. You will often see tourists lining up. They eagerly participate in this tradition. After striking the gong, they place donations in a nearby box. A cheerful lady manages the shop next to it.

Though Wat Pa Bong aims to attract visitors, it remains relatively small. It features a viharn and a chedi. You will also see the usual monks’ quarters and administrative buildings.

The viharn at Wat Pa Bong showcases traditional Lanna style. Look at the multi-tiered roof. It has overlapping layers. Slender chofa finials adorn the roof. The bargeboards are decorated with silver and gold glass fragments. This creates the body of a naga. Its head protrudes from the eaves. The gable end is richly adorned. You will see gilt foliation on a red background. Floral motifs decorate the columns. Each column is topped with lotus flower capitals. Two gilt buffalo figures are perched above the door. A seated Buddha image is also there.

Inside, the viharn is supported by five pairs of stout columns. These are painted in red lacquer. Floral decorations embellish them. Murals adorn the walls. They depict scenes from the Buddha’s past lives. The main altar features a Buddha image. It is in the Subduing Mara pose. It sits beneath a painted Bodhi tree on the back wall. Several smaller Buddha statues and photos of revered monks accompany it.

Adjacent to the viharn is a small chedi. It is painted gold. You will find it located near the west wall. It has a square base with indented corners. Four niches contain sitting Buddha images. Gilt scrollwork decorates them. Above the base, the chedi takes on a circular form. It rises to a bell-shaped structure. A gilt hti finial tops it.

Wat Pa Bong also houses a shrine. It is dedicated to King Naresuan. He was a revered warrior king. He fought to liberate Siam from Burmese occupation. This was in the 16th and 17th centuries. A life-size statue of King Naresuan stands as a tribute to his legacy. It is painted black and holds a spear. Visitors will also see offerings of stucco cockerels near the shrine. These symbolize the king’s involvement in cockfighting. This was during his time as a prisoner of the Burmese.

In the courtyard’s center, there is a large stucco Buddha image. Kneeling devata figures and birds surround it. A sign encourages worshippers to recite a mantra. This is to overcome Mara. Mara is the Buddhist equivalent of the Devil. Visitors can strike the gong for happiness and health. A donation follows this. Near the gate stands a Bodhi tree. Flags and Buddha images adorn it. You can make offerings here.
