Nestled just outside Chiang Mai’s bustling old city walls, Wat Ou Sai Kham whispers tales of golden sands and jade. The name itself, “Temple of Golden Sands,” hints at a rich history. A history you’ll uncover as we explore this tranquil sanctuary. Wat Ou Sai Kham isn’t as famous as some of Chiang Mai’s grander temples. However, its serene atmosphere and unique collection of jade Buddha images offer a different kind of charm. The temple’s origins date back over 300 years. It was named by a generous lady from Chiang Saen who donated the land and funded the initial construction. A small, possibly 16th-century chedi, once stood on this very spot. It now rests within the heart of the larger chedi we see today, a hidden relic of the past. Wat Ou Sai Kham has faced its share of challenges. The temple was abandoned at one point due to a dwindling local population that couldn’t support it. It was lovingly restored and officially registered in 1841, marking a rebirth for this spiritual haven. Wat Ou Sai Kham houses a beautiful viharn, dating back to the 1880s, which showcases classic Northern Thai architecture. The split roof with its interlocking sections is adorned with shimmering green and gold naga bargeboards. The gable end, a riot of color and intricate carvings, is a testament to the artistry of the era. Inside, the walls whisper stories from the Jataka tales, depicted in vibrant murals. Seven jade Buddha images, each a unique shade, grace the interior. These figures, along with smaller jade objects and even large jade boulders, contribute to the temple’s reputation as a haven for jade lovers. Touching the jade is believed to bring good luck. Many visitors kneel before these sacred stones, making wishes and absorbing their supposed mystical energy. The jade, much of it sourced from Myanmar’s Kachin State, adds a touch of mystique to Wat Ou Sai Kham. The principal Buddha image, however, is a bronze Lanna-style statue. It is over 200 years old and sits in a posture of subduing Mara. It is surrounded by an entourage of gilt Buddha images and ornaments, creating a radiant focal point within the viharn. Near the principal Buddha image, you’ll find a depiction of Phra Sangkachai, often referred to as the laughing Buddha. Legend says Phra Sangkachai, a disciple of the Buddha, disguised his handsome features to avoid distractions from his teachings. Wat Ou Sai Kham offers a peaceful escape from the city’s hustle, a place to connect with history and spirituality. The jade, the murals, and the serene atmosphere all combine to create a truly unforgettable experience.
