Perhaps it is the tranquil atmosphere that draws you in. Welcome to Wat O’Sakkaram a symbol of Phnom Penh. This Buddhist temple stands as a testament to Khmer national identity.

Wat O’Sakkaram is not just a place of worship. It is a historical site that embodies the spirit of Phnom Penh. Lady Penh’s story echoes through the temple grounds. She is the city’s founder and a key figure in its history. Legend says that in 1372 Lady Penh discovered four Buddha statues. She also found a Vishnu statue inside a Koki tree floating in the river. This discovery was considered a divine blessing. Penh then rallied villagers to build a hill. A small wooden temple was erected on top. This housed the statues and the hermitage became known as Wat Phnom. The temple is named after Lady Penh.

Wat Phnom symbolizes the city’s name. Phnom is Khmer for hill. The area around it became known after the hill. Wat Phnom’s total height reaches 46 meters. The temple has been rebuilt several times. The last time was in 1926. The interior has a central altar. A large bronze seated Buddha dominates it. Other statues surround it. Flowers candles and items of devotion fill the space. Murals cover the walls especially Jataka stories. These tell of the Buddha’s earlier reincarnations before enlightenment.

Murals also depict stories from the Reamker. This is the Khmer version of the Ramayana. Newer murals in the bottom tiers balance traditional and modern styles.

The southwest corner holds a shrine dedicated to Lady Penh. Devotees bring prayers and food offerings. They honor the woman who founded the wat.

King Ponhea Yat played a crucial role in Wat Phnom’s history. He moved the capital from Angkor Thom to Phnom Penh in 1397. After his death a large stupa was built for him. It sits atop Wat Phnom.

Wat Phnom appeared on the Travel Channel documentary 1000 Places to See Before You Die. It also served as a pit stop for The Amazing Race 15.

Wat Phnom is more than a historical site. It is a living testament to Phnom Penh’s past and present. It is a place where legends come to life. It is where national identity is celebrated. As you leave Wat O’Sakkaram may you carry a piece of its tranquility. Remember Lady Penh and her legacy that helped shape this great city.
