Wat Muen Ngun Gong

Did you ever hear of a temple named after ten thousand piles of gold? Right here stands Wat Muen Ngun Gong, whose name translates to just that. It’s not the most famous temple in Chiang Mai, but it holds a unique charm. Wat Muen Ngun Gong dates back to the 14th century. It’s a peaceful haven tucked away in the heart of the old city, just a short walk from Nong Buak Haad Park. Wat Muen Ngun Gong offers a glimpse into Lanna-style architecture. The main viharn, a large wooden structure, showcases intricate carvings and golden adornments. Notice the chofah, bird-like ornaments representing Garuda, decorating the roof. Inside, you’ll find a golden Buddha statue in the subduing Mara posture. The viharn’s red ceiling is adorned with golden motifs of flowers and deities. Colorful banners depicting animals of the Lanna calendar hang from the columns. Wat Muen Ngun Gong also houses a reclining Buddha. This large, gold-painted statue rests in a separate viharn, its walls covered in vibrant murals depicting Buddhist stories. A third, smaller viharn features a Buddha in the subduing Mara posture, flanked by two standing Buddha images. Golden Naga serpents guard the entrance. The ubosot, the ordination hall, stands nearby. It’s adorned with Naga heads and Makara, mythological sea creatures. The golden chedi behind the main viharn is a sight to behold. It’s topped with a spire and a multi-tiered hti. Niches on each face enshrine a standing Buddha image in Abhaya mudra, a gesture of reassurance. Smaller chedis with depictions of Lanna calendar animals surround the main chedi. Wat Muen Ngun Gong is a quiet sanctuary. It’s a place to appreciate the intricate details of Lanna art and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.
