“A hidden gem?” a visitor once whispered to me at Wat Mueang Wa. “More like a treasure chest overflowing with history.” Wat Mueang Wa, tucked away in the San Sai District of Chiang Mai, isn’t as flashy as some of the city’s silver-clad temples. But its quiet charm holds centuries of stories. Wat Mueang Wa’s history traces back to 1438. It was named after a royal document official, or “mun san.” This suggests a link to official records. Perhaps even a role in preserving knowledge. By 1522, Wat Mueang Wa was a hub for translating royal documents. Senior monks resided within its walls, adding to its intellectual aura. The temple witnessed Chiang Mai’s turbulent times, including the Burmese occupation in 1556. The Thais reclaimed the city in 1775. King Kawila then initiated a repopulation program. In 1799, he brought the Ban Ngualai community to the area around Wat Mueang Wa. These skilled silversmiths established “Ban Ngua Lai Mun San,” centering their community around the temple. This infusion of artistry likely influenced the temple’s development. During World War II, Wat Mueang Wa played a different role. It became a haven for both Thai and Imperial Japanese Army troops. Later, it served as a field hospital for casualties arriving from the south. A printing press also operated within the temple grounds. It churned out banknotes, a testament to the changing needs of wartime. Interestingly, a nearby well served as a clandestine drop-off point. Supplies were smuggled to Allied POWs held at the companion Wat Si Suphan. This act of quiet resistance adds another layer to Wat Mueang Wa’s multifaceted history. Today, a Japanese War Memorial Hall stands on the temple grounds. Built in 1981, it honors fallen IJA veterans. The hall also serves as a reminder of the complex history shared between Thailand and Japan.
