Marvelous Wat Mueang Mang. A 16th-century Lanna temple stands before you. Its beauty is undeniable. Notice the viharn’s multi-tiered roof. Nagas adorn the bargeboards. Chofa bird heads perch at the apexes. The entrance is magnificent. Large nagas guard it extending along the balustrade.

Wat Mueang Mang is more than just a pretty face. It’s a significant part of Chiang Mai’s history. The viharn’s gable end is richly decorated. Carved gilt foliate work and floral motifs abound. Several figures are carved into the wood. A Dhamma wheel is held by four monks. Above them near the roof’s apex sits the three-headed Erewan. Two deer flank the mythical beast.

Look closely. The portico’s door and windows have intricate moldings. Two nagas form an arch above the door. A peacock is nestled in the tympanum. The doors and window shutters are masterpieces. Small pieces of mother of pearl are set on a black background. They depict Devata figures armed with swords and offering lotus flowers.

Wat Mueang Mang’s chedi is equally impressive. It’s built in the Lanna style. The layered base is square with indented corners. The mid-section is also square. Niches on all four sides contain standing Buddha images. Their mudras are unusual. Both hands are placed overlapping below the waist.

The octagonal rounded part above the mid-section supports the bell. Manusihas man-lion mythical creatures guard each corner at the base of the octagonal layers. The bell itself is stunning. It shines brightly. Gold and silver pieces of glass create a diamond pattern. Floral patterns border the design. The neck is similarly decorated and supports the Burmese-style hti a gilt umbrella.

The ubosot is similar to the viharn suggesting they were constructed simultaneously. The Lanna style is evident in the design. The roof has two overlapping tiers split into two sections. Nagas are set along the bargeboards. Bird chofas crown the roof apexes. The gable end is richly ornamented. Detailed carvings of foliate work and floral motifs decorate the facade. A bird figure sits at the center. The columns supporting the portico are lavishly decorated. Deva figures and floral carved patterns adorn the door. Hamsas and nagas are above the lintel.

The ho rakang the bell tower is simpler. It’s mostly plain whitewashed concrete. It features two levels. The roof however is ornamented. Nagas and chofas are visible.

Wat Mueang Mang stands as a testament to Lanna artistry and spiritual devotion. Take a moment to absorb its grandeur. Remember the stories etched in its wood and stone. This temple’s beauty will stay with you long after you leave.
