Amidst the bustling cityscape of Bangkok, a serene oasis awaits: Wat Lao. This temple serves as the spiritual heart of Riverside’s Lao community, a sanctuary of peace and reflection. Many members of this community arrived after the Vietnam War, seeking refuge and a new beginning in Thailand and then in Riverside. Wat Lao stands as a testament to their resilience and devotion. Wat Lao is more than just a temple; it is a vibrant cultural hub. The word “wat” itself means “Buddhist temple” in Lao, signifying its central role in the community’s life. Several Buddhist monks reside at Wat Lao, their presence adding to the sacred atmosphere. Theravada Buddhist services, held within the temple walls, offer opportunities for devotees to make merit. They listen to sermons and provide food to the monks, participating in age-old traditions. For the Lao community, Wat Lao is a place of gathering and celebration. Festive holidays, such as Lao New Year and the day commemorating Buddha’s nirvana, transform the temple grounds into a lively scene. Families spend hours praying, attending sermons, sharing food, and connecting with one another. Wat Lao also serves as a vital link between the Lao community and the broader Riverside community. In 2001, two significant events highlighted this connection. The tragic death of Vanpaseuth Phaisouphanh, a young Lao man, prompted community members to engage with city officials on issues of police accountability. This difficult period fostered stronger bonds within the community. Following this tragedy, the Lao community organized a commemoration for the victims of the September 11th attacks. This event, attended by Riverside officials and police officers, showcased the community’s solidarity and resilience. The funds raised were donated to the Red Cross, demonstrating their compassion and commitment to the wider community. Wat Lao stands at 6021 Rutland, Riverside, CA 92503. Its doors are open to all who seek solace and connection.
