You stand before Wat Ku Tao. This is not just any temple. It is a vibrant testament to Chiang Mai’s history and a fascinating melting pot of cultural influences.

Wat Ku Tao, a Shan temple, whispers stories of bygone centuries. It was built in 1613. This was a time of great upheaval in the Lanna kingdom. The Burmese prince, Nawrahta Minsaw, had invaded and taken control. His ashes were laid to rest here. It is said that the temple was named for the chedi that holds them. ‘Ku’ means a place where ash and bones are kept after cremation. ‘Tao’ means melon or ash.

The chedi at Wat Ku Tao is unique, a remarkable stack of five diminishing spheres. If you look closely, you might imagine the shape of melons, which gave rise to its nickname, the Watermelon Stupa. It is believed that the design was inspired by structures found in Yunnan province in China. Traders and migrants from that region brought their artistic influence to Chiang Mai.

The chedi is a stunning sight. It stands tall, radiating ancient serenity. As you walk around the temple, the intricate details mesmerize you. At Wat Ku Tao, you can witness the merging of Burmese and Chinese artistic traditions. You see a fascinating fusion of styles that represents the history of this region.

Wat Ku Tao is more than just architecture, it’s also a place where traditions are kept alive. The temple is one of the two Shan temples in the city. The other one is Wat Pa Pao. Wat Ku Tao’s main attraction is the annual Poy Sang Long ceremony. It is a beautiful and moving spectacle that takes place towards the end of March or beginning of April. Young boys aged seven to fourteen years old go to the temple to be ordained as novices. They learn Buddhist teachings for a period of time that can vary from a week to many months or even longer. The ordination is a significant event in their lives.

As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the rich heritage of Wat Ku Tao. The temple is a captivating example of how history, culture, and faith intertwine.
