Seven spires pierce the sky above us. They belong to the magnificent Wat Jed Yod, a temple with a rich history. Wat Jed Yod, also known as Wat Photharam Maha Vihara, stands as a testament to the grandeur of the Lanna kingdom. It was built in the 15th century under the reign of King Tilokkarat. The temple’s architecture is a captivating blend of Lanna, Rattanakosin, Lao, Chinese, and Indian influences. This fusion reflects the diverse cultural landscape of the era. Wat Jed Yod’s most striking feature is its viharn, crowned with seven distinctive chedis. This unique design, a departure from traditional Lanna styles, was inspired by the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India. This sacred site marks the place where Buddha attained enlightenment. The number seven holds special significance, representing the seven weeks Buddha spent in meditation after achieving enlightenment. The walls of the viharn are adorned with intricate carvings. Look closely to spot the seventy Thewada figures, celestial beings depicted in various poses. These sculptures, though some are weathered by time, showcase the remarkable artistry of the Lanna period. Inside the viharn, you will find serene Buddha images. A large seated Buddha presides over the space, while a smaller one sits opposite the entrance. In 1477, Wat Jed Yod witnessed a pivotal moment in Buddhist history. It hosted the Eighth World Buddhist Council, a gathering of monks to examine the Tripitaka, the sacred scriptures of Buddhism. Before we move on, take a moment to appreciate the tranquility of Wat Jed Yod. The spacious grounds, shaded by ancient trees, offer a sense of peace that echoes the temple’s spiritual significance. Wat Jed Yod is more than just a visual feast. It’s a journey through time, a testament to faith, and a peaceful refuge in the heart of Chiang Mai.
