“Wat Huan Kan? What kind of name is that?”, you might be asking yourselves. Wat Huan Kan, my friends, is no ordinary temple. This temple, right here before us, holds a secret, a hidden past whispering through the intricate carvings and vibrant colours. Wat Huan Kan wasn’t always its name. Long ago, this sacred space was known as Wat Kan Thom, named after its founder. But time, as it often does, brought change. Look closely at the structure just beyond the main courtyard. Do you see those magnificent elephant figures, their stone trunks reaching towards the heavens? It is these elephants that lend the temple its current name – Wat Chang Kham, the “Elephant-Propped Temple.” Sadly, what you see now are merely remnants, shadows of a grand temple that once graced this very spot. The temple now lies in ruins, a hauntingly beautiful testament to the ebb and flow of history. Today, Wat Chang Kham stands silent, yet full of stories. It is encompassed within the grounds of a living, breathing temple, a testament to the enduring power of faith and the enduring beauty of ancient craftsmanship.
