The glittering mosaics on the facade of Wat Don Chai catch the light, making you blink. This magnificent temple is a true gem in Chiang Mai, a testament to the city’s rich cultural heritage. Located in the heart of the city, near the bustling Night Market, Wat Don Chai, also known as the Wat Sri Don Chai, is an architectural marvel.
One of the most striking features of the temple is its two-story viharn, a rarity in Chiang Mai. This impressive structure, with its towering height, features a large roof with three interlocking sections, topped by a tiered umbrella in the center. The viharn boasts intricate carvings which adorn the window shutters, depicting stories from the life of the Buddha and Buddhist hell. The walls, however, are left undecorated, showcasing old photographs of revered monks.
The most impressive feature of the viharn is the main altar, constructed with extensive use of silver and colored mosaic pieces. The entire back wall is covered in shimmering silver mosaic, creating an extraordinary visual spectacle.
