Step inside the serene embrace of Wat Disanukaram, a magnificent temple located on Dismark and Worachak Roads in Bangkok. This temple, formerly known as Wat Chang Wang Dit, is named after its builder. It was built in the era of King Mongkut, who later renamed it Wat Disanukaram. As you stand before the Ubosot, the ordination hall, you’ll be awestruck by its elevated platform and surrounding gallery. Admire the two-tiered roof adorned with glittering gilded and stained-glass pieces. The gable ends are a feast for the eyes, showcasing vibrant stained-glass floral motifs. The window niches are designed like crowns and embellished with intricate stucco rose motifs. Step inside the Ubosot and marvel at the exquisite craftsmanship. The door panels are adorned with inlaid mother-of-pearl floral designs. The window panels are gilded and lacquered with a Ratchawat design. Notice the mythical lions of plaster on both sides of the entrances to the Ubosot and at the stair bases of the gallery. The lower part of the inside walls are made of marble, while the upper part features captivating murals. These paintings depict stories from the Ten Lives of the Lord Buddha. They tell of the Buddha’s previous incarnations on earth before achieving enlightenment. At the top of the walls, a painting depicts an assembly of deities, their presence signifying divine blessings upon the temple and its devotees. The wall opposite to the Principal Buddha image is painted with the episode of the division of the Lord Buddha’s relics. This painting reveals the process of dividing the Buddha’s remains after his death and how they were distributed to different places. The wall behind the Principal Buddha image depicts the episode of the Lord Buddha subduing the Mara. This painting shows the Buddha’s victory over Mara, the embodiment of evil and temptation, signifying his triumph over negativity. The inside of the door panel is adorned with an image of Chiao Kang, a popular figure in Thai mythology known for his wisdom and strength. The window panels are decorated with pictures of guardians or yakshas. These mythical creatures protect the temple and its inhabitants from harm. Leaving the ordination hall, venture to the Vihara. It is smaller than the Ubosot, resembling its style with a three-tiered roof. The gable ends feature a Dhamma Wheel surrounded by a floral motif, symbolizing the teachings of the Buddha. The Vihara’s windows and doors are decorated with various stucco rose motifs, a testament to Thai artistry. The floor is made of marble, adding to the temple’s elegance. Let the beauty of Wat Disanukaram wash over you, as you take in its rich history, architectural splendor, and profound spiritual significance.
