Let’s pause for a few moments at Wat Damnak, one of the most significant pagodas in Siem Reap. It may be the largest pagoda in Siem Reap, but Wat Damnak wasn’t always a place of worship. Imagine, if you will, a time before the calming chants of monks filled the air. This very spot was once the royal residence of King Sisowath, from 1904 to 1927. He resided here when visiting Siem Reap. The king’s palace was later moved to a new location close to the Banana King Ashram. In the old courtyard of the palace, a beautiful Buddhist pagoda was built. Now, picture the vibrant colors of the pagoda, the intricate carvings, the golden Buddha statues, and the serene pond in the center of the courtyard. The details are captivating and whisper tales of ancient Khmer culture. In 1935, a young man named Prin Tim was chosen to be the new leader of the pagoda. It was he who built the current pagoda of Wat Damnak and a youth hostel, too. Prin Tim became responsible for building numerous schools in the region. The youth hostel was part of a wider movement in Cambodia. This development was based on a French social initiative, hoping that it would encourage young Cambodians to explore the world and expand their minds. At Wat Damnak, the youth hostel was a fascinating meeting place, a gateway for eager young minds to step into wider horizons. And you know what? The youth hostel is still there, now part of Wat Damnak. It’s a reminder of the progressive thinking that has always been a part of the pagoda, a place of learning, of religious practice, and of an ever-evolving spirit.
