Curious to see a temple that reflects a blend of history and devotion? Wat Chan Nok is a testament to Bangkok’s rich cultural tapestry.

Wat Chan Nok, often simply called Wat Nok, stands in the Chom Thong District. It offers a glimpse into the past. Once upon a time, this temple was a central point for the Bang Khun Thian people. A canal flowed in front of it. This waterway provided easy access to the Chao Phraya River. Imagine lively celebrations here. Loy Krathong, markets, Songkran, and Buddhist ceremonies filled the air.

Let’s step back to around 1703. Two devout Buddhists founded Wat Chan Nok. It was initially named Wat Yommalok. Later, they established Wat Bang Khunthian Klang nearby. After World War II, Phra Athikan Samniang renamed Wat Yommalok to Wat Bang Khun Thian Nok. This change aligned the temple’s name with the Bang Khunthian neighborhood. The temple was formerly located in Bang Khunthian District. Later, it was moved to Jomthong.

Now, observe the ordination hall. It was constructed during the third reign. Its design showcases Chinese architectural influences. Floral designs adorn the gable ends. These are crafted from delicate porcelain.

Inside Wat Chan Nok, a Sukhothai-style principle Buddha image radiates serenity. It is in the attitude of meditation. Fifteen other Buddha images surround it. Four chedis stand at the compass points of the ordination hall. The consecrated boundary spans 16 meters in width and 21 meters in length.

In 2007, Ms. Phanid Amon contributed funds to renovate the ordination hall. Today, the Fine Arts Department recognizes it as an archaeological site. Murals and other features are preserved with care. Wat Chan Nok is more than a temple. It is a living monument. It connects us to the traditions and beliefs of generations past.
