Was it destiny or chance that led Thai Buddhists to Berlin? They initially gathered as a prayer group. These people met in private homes. Monks from Thailand would visit temporarily. In 1991, they founded the Thai Buddhist Association Berlin. The former Consul General Bandit Sotipalarit chaired the association. They began collecting donations. Their goal was to build a Thai temple in Berlin.

Here before us stands Wat Buddhavihara Berlin. It is a Buddhist temple and monastery. This Wat belongs to the Thai Theravada Buddhist tradition. The Thai Buddhist Association Berlin oversees it.

In 1992, Somdet Phra Phutthachan decided to send two monks to Berlin. He was the abbot of Wat Saket in Bangkok. He was in charge of Buddhist missions in Thailand. By August 1992, the association rented a house in Glasgower Straße. This served as a temporary temple. The “Thai Berlin Temple” moved to Potsdamer Straße in Schöneberg the following year. It then moved to Steinkirchener Straße in Wittenau. The temple’s opening was celebrated in August 1995. Phra Maha Photiwongsachan gave the temple its name. He was the abbot of Wat Ratcha-orasaram in Bangkok.

Wat Buddhavihara Berlin has become a beacon of Thai Buddhist culture. It is a serene space in the bustling city.

In December 2011, the association purchased a large plot of land. This former industrial site cost one million euros. It is located in Heinersdorf. Monks and community members transformed the land. In June 2012, a founding ceremony took place. The main Buddha statue was moved in July 2013. Meditation and living spaces were temporarily in barracks. The main house was undergoing renovation.

Currently, three monks and five nuns live at Wat Buddhavihara Berlin. They mostly come from Thailand. They practice Theravada Buddhism. The monastery hosts religious festivals and ceremonies. These are mainly for Thai Buddhists. Guests are always welcome. The Thai New Year festival is a highlight each April. It’s known as Songkran.

In June 2023, the sacred district was marked. This was for the future Ubosot. The Ubosot is the ordination hall of the monastery. The ceremony was Fang Luk Nimit.
