Wat Botum Sakor, also known as Wat Botum, whispers tales of kings, lotus blossoms, and a city’s rich spiritual heritage. Wat Botum Sakor’s history intertwines with Phnom Penh’s very foundations. Founded by King Ponhea Yat in 1442, it stands as one of the city’s oldest and most significant pagodas. Originally named Wat Khpop Ta Yang, its name changed in 1865 to Wat Botum Vatey Reacheveraram, meaning “the temple of the king with a lotus flower as a fence.” The name reflects the lotus pond that once graced this sacred ground. Today, we simply call it Wat Botum Sakor or Wat Botum. Imagine the scene centuries ago, with monks chanting amidst the fragrant lotus blossoms. Wat Botum Sakor has witnessed the ebb and flow of Phnom Penh’s history. Within its walls, prominent Cambodian bhikkhus have been ordained. The grounds have also become the final resting place for numerous politicians and eminent figures of the city. The Khmer Writers’ Association even calls Wat Botum Sakor home. The main stupa, a towering 33-meter-high quadrangular structure, houses sacred relics. Look closely at the accompanying smaller stupas, each 6 meters high, marking the four corners. These architectural details add to the temple’s unique charm. Wat Botum Sakor’s history is not without its transitions. In 1937, during the reign of King Sisowath Monivong, the old temple structures were dismantled. A new temple rose in their place, reflecting the enduring spirit of this sacred site.
