How did this temple get its nickname? We are at Wat Borom Sathon, also known as Wat Don. The nickname “Wat Don” translates to “Temple of the Island”. It hints at a time when the Chao Phraya River flowed a different course. Wat Borom Sathon was once nestled on a small island. King Rama IV, while he was still a monk, originally ordered the construction of Wat Borom Sathon. He envisioned it as a serene forest temple, complementing the bustling community temple of Wat Bowornniwet Vihara. Later, King Rama V, his successor, oversaw its renovation and bestowed upon it the new name “Wat Boromniwas”. However, the temple is still affectionately known as Wat Don. This temple houses a remarkable treasure, the Phra Tosapholayarn, a Buddha image in the revered marn vichai pose. You’ll find it enshrined as the principal image within the sacred ubosot. Wat Borom Sathon holds a unique place in the artistic heritage of Bangkok. Step inside the ubosot, and you’ll be greeted by extraordinary murals crafted by the acclaimed artist of the era, Khrua In Khong. These aren’t your typical temple murals. They feature landscapes and figures rendered in a distinct Western style, much like those found in Wat Bowornniwet Vihara. The murals offer a glimpse into 19th-century Thai life with scenes of daily activities and festivals. Look closely, and you’ll even spot scenes depicting Europeans and innovations like trains and telescopes, elements rarely seen in traditional Thai temple art. This blend of Eastern spirituality and Western influence makes Wat Borom Sathon a true hidden gem.
