Dragons consuming their own tails. What could that mean here at Wat Ban Den? It is one of Chiang Mai’s most extraordinary temples. Some even say it’s like a blend of Buddha and Dr. Seuss.

Wat Ban Den Temple stands 45 km north of Chiang Mai. It is also known as Wat Den Sali Mueang Kaen. This temple is most known for its unique architecture and vibrant colors. Intricate carvings blend traditional Lanna, Burmese, and Thai styles.

The temple complex has numerous buildings and structures. Temples, halls, monk quarters, and a meditation hall are here. There are also 12 stupas. These represent the zodiac signs. This makes Wat Ban Den truly grand.

Wat Ban Den dates back over 500 years. It was originally a small, simple temple. Its transformation began in the late 20th century. Phra Kru Ba Tuang, a well-respected abbot, initiated major renovations. Under his leadership, the temple expanded dramatically. It evolved into the grand complex it is today. The abbot’s vision was to create a spiritual haven. It would serve the local community and attract visitors worldwide.

The 12 stupas each represent a different zodiac sign. This design reflects the belief in astrology in Thai culture. The ornate buildings are filled with murals. These depict Buddhist stories, teachings, and folklore. They enrich the temple’s historical and cultural depth. Wat Ban Den continues to serve as a center for Buddhist practice. It is a place for meditation and community gatherings. It also draws those who seek to marvel at its beauty.

The temple went unnoticed until 1988. A new abbot took charge. He decided to renovate it. He sought community donations for support. During his birthday celebration, thousands gathered. They contributed 39 “money trees.” Each held 100000 Thai Baht on his 39th birthday. Donations have been pouring in ever since. The abbot aimed to attract more people to the faith. He wanted to introduce them to Buddhism.

Numerous buildings are decorated with wood carvings. They are in the distinctive Lanna style. These carvings often portray mythical creatures. Colossal Naga serpents protect some structures. Others feature impressive white lion statues. They are known as Singha. Singha represents strength and nobility. These embellishments lend a mystical cultural essence to the temple.

Specific sculptures depict Naga serpents coiling. They consume each other’s tails. In Buddhism, the dragons symbolize the eternal nature of the spiritual journey. It represents the cycle of birth and rebirth with no clear beginning or end. It invites contemplation on the nature of existence, time, and causality.

Wat Ban Den is a mix of traditional folk beliefs. You find symbols from Thai Theravada Buddhism. There are also Chinese Mahayana symbols. Mythological animals from an Indian tradition are present. It is an expression of pan-Buddhism.

Wat Ban Den is full of impressions and details. Some visitors describe it as over the top. It is still growing and under construction. Some people find it hard to get that deep religious atmosphere here.

Kruba Chaiya founded the temple. It was built below a low hill in 1894. Wat Sahari Sribunrang was the original name. The full official name today is Wat Bandensali Sri Mueang Kaen. In the late 1980s, local Thai people, Chinese, and minority people renovated the temple. The idea was that anyone could contribute. Therefore, this created a mix of different beliefs within the complex.

Visitors can enjoy historic Lanna religious art. A reclining Buddha and seated Buddhas are here. You find the “happy” Chinese Maitreya style Buddha. It is possible to pay homage to the 12 animals in the Chinese Zodiac.

Remember to follow a conservative dress code when you visit Wat Ban Den.
