Built in the 1920s the Wasserwerk Misburg stands as a testament to a bygone era. This waterworks in Hanover’s Misburg-Nord district is more than just a building. It’s a piece of history a symbol of Misburg’s growth during the Weimar Republic.

The Wasserwerk Misburg wasn’t just erected overnight. It was a project born from necessity. Misburg’s population was booming. A reliable water supply was crucial. Architect Friedrich Fischer designed this remarkable structure. He masterfully blended the cubic forms of the New Objectivity movement. He also incorporated the expressionist reimagining of Northern German brick traditions.

Two cubic structures emerged near the water sources. They housed the filtration and pumping systems. A residential building with an apartment for the plant operator completed the complex. Fischer cleverly connected the residential building to the machinery house with an archway. Despite the shared material the flat-roofed cubes for the technical equipment contrast sharply with the more traditional residential building. The technical buildings have rhythmically arranged triangular buttresses. They also feature very narrow high windows. Their stark lines echo similar expressionist buildings in Hanover. The Anzeigerhochhaus and the Franzius-Institut are examples.

Professor Otto Geissler a teacher at the Technical University of Hanover oversaw the engineering. His involvement isn’t without a darker side. In 1932 he took his students on a field trip to the Wasserwerk. They stopped at a local inn known for its SPD clientele. After the Nazi takeover some of his students used this information to denounce him as a socialist sympathizer. Sadly Geissler became the first professor at Hanover University to be prematurely retired after 1933.

The Wasserwerk Misburg served Misburg faithfully until 1971. The water it treated went to a water tower on Hartmannstrasse. That tower however was demolished in 1980. The Wasserwerk itself stood unused for years though some equipment remained. Today parts of the former waterworks remain standing. A testament to its enduring presence in the landscape. The Wasserwerk Misburg a remarkable blend of engineering and history. A story whispered through bricks and mortar. A symbol of growth progress and the shadows of the past.
