Curious about Dortmund’s oldest skyscraper? This is the Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof. It stands as a testament to a bygone era. Once vital for railway operations, this tower now watches over the city.

The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof may not scrape the sky like modern giants, but it holds a unique place in Dortmund’s history. It is a 45-meter-high brick tower. Its simple facade hints at its functional past.

Back in the late 1870s, this area was a bustling railway hub called Südbahnhof. For many years, it was an important station. Today, only the Wasserturm remains as a reminder of that era. The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof is now a landmark.

The Deutsche Reichsbahn built the Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof between 1923 and 1927. Its primary purpose was to supply water to steam locomotives. Up in the tower’s upper levels, two cylindrical concrete tanks could hold 800 cubic meters of water. This ensured the locomotives had enough water.

Architects H. Lehmann and M. Venner designed the Wasserturm. They created Dortmund’s first steel-reinforced concrete frame building. This innovative design is hidden behind the brick facade.

The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof had other functions too. Originally, the ground floor housed shops. The upper floors provided social spaces for railway workers. There was even a bathhouse and accommodation for train staff.

By the 1950s and 60s, the railway station closed. The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof stopped being used for its original purpose. It was renovated in the 1970s, then stood empty from the mid-1990s.

In 1999 and 2000, architect Ralf Schulte-Ladbeck carefully restored the Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof. He preserved its original technical features. Now, the landmark serves as office space. Schulte-Ladbeck’s architecture firm is located here. Several other companies from diverse fields also call it home.

The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof is more than just a building. It is a protected monument. It is also part of the Route of Industrial Culture. The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof stands as a symbol of Dortmund’s industrial heritage. Its transformation from a functional water tower to a modern office space shows Dortmund’s ability to adapt and preserve its past.

The Wasserturm Dortmund Südbahnhof continues to be a significant part of the cityscape. It blends history and modernity. Next time you pass by, take a moment to appreciate this silent witness to Dortmund’s past. It is a reminder of the city’s ever-evolving story.
