“A Mannheim landmark, built not for the city, but for flour?” I ask, gesturing towards the Wasserturm der Pfalzmühle Mannheim. “Indeed,” I continue, “this sturdy water tower, completed in 1906, wasn’t part of Mannheim’s grand water supply scheme. It served the Pfalzmühle, a flour mill boasting cutting-edge technology. The Pfalzmühle, established in 1898 in Schifferstadt, later relocated to Mannheim in 1907. This move was prompted by larger mills popping up along waterways, rendering their original location less profitable. By 1909, the Mannheim Pfalzmühle, with its accompanying Wasserturm der Pfalzmühle Mannheim, was operational.” I pause, letting the image of the bustling mill sink in. “In 1912, the old Schifferstadt mill closed. It was sold in 1918 under the strict condition that it would never again operate as a mill. Meanwhile, here in Mannheim, the Pfalzmühle thrived. Its advanced milling machines and storage capabilities allowed it to quickly ramp up production.” I lead your gaze towards the tower. “Imagine the activity. By 1928, Mannheim’s city advertisements proudly proclaimed the Pfalzmühle as one of Germany’s largest and most modern large-scale milling operations. This industrial giant employed 170 workers and 46 officials. The Pfalzmühle even invested heavily in other Mannheim mills, like the Rheinmühlenwerke and the Kauffmannmühle, demonstrating its significant influence.” I point to the tower again. “The Wasserturm der Pfalzmühle Mannheim stands as a testament to that era of industrial innovation. It silently witnessed the rise of the Pfalzmühle, its water crucial to the milling process.” I offer a final thought. “For years, the Werhahn-Mühle group owned the mill, until 2014. Then, the Bindewald-Gutting-Mühle group took over, marking the end of flour production at this historic site. The Wasserturm der Pfalzmühle Mannheim remains, a proud reminder of Mannheim’s industrial past.”
