High above Braunsdorf stands the Wasserturm a testament to a bygone era. This isn’t just any water tower. It’s the unofficial symbol of Braunsdorf a village nestled in the picturesque Zschopautal valley.

Built in 1910 the Wasserturm Braunsdorf wasn’t just a functional structure. It was a symbol of progress. The burgeoning village needed a reliable water supply. The architect H Gottschald from Chemnitz designed this 25-meter-high marvel. It served approximately 80 properties in the upper part of Braunsdorf.

A deep well provided the water a nine-meter-deep well three meters in diameter. This well held 50 to 55 cubic meters of water. A Deutz diesel engine powered a pump system. This system delivered water via a 60mm pipe to the elevated reservoir 750 meters away. A dedicated pump attendant even looked after the engine. Think of Günter Lahl one such attendant. He maintained the system ensuring a constant supply.

But the story doesn’t end there. In 1912 the Wasserturm wasn’t alone. Construction of a villa colony began along Harrasallee. The water tower was part of a larger plan to create a desirable residential area. The whole area was blossoming. The tower provided the water essential to this new development.

In 1933 records show water consumption was around 100-150 liters per person daily in the new colony. It wasn’t only a water tower. It represented aspirations. It was crucial for the progress of Braunsdorf.

Later the Wasserturm’s ownership changed. A Chemnitz lawyer acquired it around 1997. He converted the structure into living quarters. The water tank had to go. The exterior was renovated. The old spiral staircase though remained. The water tower was finally saved.

Now the Wasserturm Braunsdorf is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of Braunsdorf’s history resilience and enduring charm. It’s a reminder of how a community thrives and adapts even after changes of ownership and purpose. It stands tall a testament to the past a symbol of the present and a beacon for the future.
