Picture the Wasserschloss a sturdy brick building nestled in Hamburg’s Speicherstadt. This isn’t just any building. It’s a landmark. A four-story waterside castle. Built between 1905 and 1907 it stands as a testament to a bygone era.

The Wasserschloss wasn’t always a tea shop and restaurant. Originally it housed the winders the vital workers who maintained the hydraulic warehouse winches. These winches were essential. There were no elevators then. All goods were hoisted up and down the warehouse facades using these impressive machines.

Imagine the heavy machinery the constant whirring of gears. The winders needed a workspace. The Wasserschloss provided that workspace along with living quarters. Its location was perfect. Accessible by land and water. Heavy replacement parts could be easily transported. Two cranes on the east side facilitated water transport. An old cobblestone street led directly to the building.

The Wasserschloss’s design is noteworthy. It likely followed plans by architects Bernhard Hanssen and Emil Meerwein. These architects also worked on Hamburg’s City Hall. Note the historicizing brick facade the decorative granite and glass tile bands. The green copper roof adds a pop of color. The tall arched windows and round bay windows are also striking. The small clock tower with its green glazed tiles and red granite is a special feature. A flat waterside extension on the back was added after the war. It’s made of rubble stone a stark contrast to the original structure.

For years the Wasserschloss contained offices and storage spaces. Today though it’s a hub of activity. There’s a tea trading business downstairs plus a delightful restaurant. It’s also a popular spot for photos. It has even been used as a filming location for children’s television shows. The Wasserschloss has become a symbol of Hamburg’s rich history and architectural heritage. It’s a perfect example of how a building can adapt and thrive while maintaining its historical charm.
