Timeless tales whisper from the stones of Wasserschloss Haus Rodenberg. This magnificent water castle stands before you a testament to centuries of history. Originally a medieval water fortress it first appeared in records in 1290. Imagine knights patrolling its moats a scene long gone yet vividly present.

Haus Rodenberg wasn’t just a grand home it was a fortified structure. Completely surrounded by water it stood as a symbol of power and defense. The Renaissance-style gardens were meticulously planned. Square sections were enclosed by rough stone walls. A circular water basin and pavilion formed the heart of the main garden.

Throughout the years the castle changed hands. Families like Voss and Bodelschwingh left their indelible marks on its walls. Intriguingly the castle faced destruction in 1424 during a conflict between dukes. Yet it rose again stronger than before. Rebuilt and remodeled between 1689 and 1698 it transformed into the Baroque water castle we see today.

Sadly the 19th and 20th centuries brought decline. Only the outer ward and its economic section survived. But the spirit of Haus Rodenberg persevered. In 1985 the city of Dortmund acquired the castle and park. A thorough restoration followed ending in 1996.

Today Haus Rodenberg thrives. It houses Dortmund’s adult education center a puppet theater and a restaurant. The restored mill pond and park are a popular retreat. The echoes of medieval battles and noble gatherings still resonate here. This isn’t just a building it’s a living history a place where the past connects with the present.
