Have you ever seen a giant mushroom made of bronze? Here at Leon-Jessel-Platz stands the Wasserpilz. Wasserpilz translates to “water mushroom”. This whimsical fountain, sculpted by Emanuel Scharfenberg, was unveiled in 1984. The Wasserpilz isn’t just any ordinary fountain. It’s a larger-than-life bronze mushroom. Water flows from the top, cascading down its sides into a shallow basin. Look closely at the sculpture. Notice the incredibly lifelike details. You can see bite marks, nibbled edges, and even the depiction of maggots on its surface. These details add a touch of realism to the fantastical nature of a giant bronze mushroom. The Wasserpilz sits in a circular basin. The basin’s edge is paved with granite stones. Its center is also paved and gently domed, creating a subtle pedestal for the mushroom. The greenish patina on the bronze adds to its charm. It gives the impression that this magical mushroom has been here for ages. The fountain’s official name, cast into the bronze itself, is accompanied by the inscription “1984 / H. NOACK BERLIN”. This commemorates the year of its creation and the foundry responsible for casting it. The Wasserpilz at Leon-Jessel-Platz is more than just a fountain. It’s a work of art. It’s a touch of whimsy in the heart of Berlin.
