Did you ever hear music played by water? Here at the Wasserorgel in Planten un Blomen, water dances to the rhythm of music. This isn’t your average fountain. The Wasserorgel, also known as the water light organ, is a unique spectacle of water, light, and music. It’s a magical performance that has captivated audiences for decades. From May to September, the Wasserorgel comes alive every evening, transforming the Parksee into a stage of mesmerizing beauty. The performance features live music, water fountains, and colorful lights, synchronized to create a harmonious display. Two artists orchestrate this mesmerizing show. One manipulates the 99 water jets. The other plays the “light piano” with its 95 white keys. The main water beam can reach an impressive height of 36 meters. The fountains rise and fall with the music, creating an ever-changing spectacle of water and light. This breathtaking display consumes a significant amount of water. It is equivalent to the hourly water consumption of a city with 500,000 inhabitants. The Wasserorgel’s history stretches back to 1938 when the first water fountain was installed in Planten un Blomen. This fountain featured a 50-meter high water jet and two side fountains. It was later expanded for the International Horticultural Exhibitions in 1953 and 1963. The Wasserorgel, as we know it today, took shape after the International Garden Exhibition (IGA) in 1973. As the final notes fade and the lights dim, the Wasserorgel leaves a lasting impression. It is a reminder of the magic that can be created when water, light, and music intertwine.
