Could you imagine a medieval knight surveying his domain from here? This is Wasserburg Rockhausen. It whispers tales of Thuringian lords. Wasserburg Rockhausen was once a moated castle near Erfurt. It stood on the northwest side of Rockhausen village. Today, only whispers of its past remain.

Let’s journey back. In 1240, the Lords of Rockhausen built this Wasserburg Rockhausen. They were under the control of the Counts of Käfernburg near Arnstadt. This Wasserburg Rockhausen held the status of a tax-free manor.

Water filled the castle’s moat naturally. A layer of groundwater fed its pond. This natural spring was a vital part of its defense.

Time marched on. In 1856, the island and castle ruins were built over. A manor house claimed the space. Then, in 1906, a farmstead was built. Large parts of the former moat were filled in. This happened between the manor house and the farmstead.

Today, Wasserburg Rockhausen shows only slight traces of its former glory. Minimal ditch remnants and low wall remains can be seen. It requires a keen eye to envision the past.

The story of Wasserburg Rockhausen is one of change. Lords and knights gave way to farmers and manor houses. Despite these changes, the land retains its history. It whispers stories of a bygone era. Wasserburg Rockhausen reminds us that even ruins have tales to tell.

Imagine life here centuries ago. Knights defended their land. Villagers sought shelter within these walls. Though much has changed, Wasserburg Rockhausen remains a place of history. Its story connects us to Thuringia’s medieval past. The Lords of Rockhausen would be proud.
