Curious about how a small village touched the world stage? We are standing in Waßmannsdorf. This village boasts a history stretching back centuries. It even played a silent role in the Cold War.

Waßmannsdorf’s story begins in 1350. It was first mentioned as Wasmanstorp. The name’s origin remains somewhat mysterious. It may come from the German name Wasmod or the Germanic word for “father’s sister”.

For centuries, Waßmannsdorf remained a small rural community. In 1375, the village had 48 Hufen. A Hufen is an old land measurement. The village also included a village headman five Kossäten a windmill and an inn. A church was first documented in 1380.

From 1961 to 1989, Waßmannsdorf bordered West Berlin. The Berlin Wall crossed its municipal borders. This small village became a silent witness to a divided world. Imagine the stark contrast. Life went on here. Just beyond, stood a barrier of concrete and barbed wire.

Until 2003, Waßmannsdorf was an autonomous municipality. Then it merged into Schönefeld. As of 2015, Waßmannsdorf had a population of 784.

Waßmannsdorf is near the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport. The Berlin outer ring crosses it. It is served by a railway station. Lines S45 and S9 connect it to the airport. The Expressway Potsdam-Schönefeld project also involves the village.

The village boasts a fieldstone church. It likely dates back to the mid-13th century. A western tower was added in 1926. Inside is a wooden pulpit altar from the early 18th century.

The Waßmannsdorf wastewater treatment plant is nearby. It is one of Berlin’s three main treatment plants. Originally opened in 1927, it was expanded in the 1990s. It can now process 230000 cubic meters per day.

Today, Waßmannsdorf offers a glimpse into Brandenburg’s past. It stands as a testament to resilience. It is a place where you can explore the layers of German history. From its medieval roots to its role in a divided world, Waßmannsdorf is a village with stories to tell. Take a moment to appreciate the quiet strength of this small German village.
