Can a church be a symbol of community even after it’s gone? Here at the Washington Park Chapel, that question hangs in the air. This church, nestled in the heart of Wash Park, was more than just a building. It was a living, breathing part of the neighborhood for nearly a century. The Washington Park Chapel, originally Washington Park United Church of Christ, held countless memories within its walls. Children were raised here, families mourned loved ones, and the community rallied together in times of need. The church even fostered interfaith connections. In 1954, it welcomed both Jewish and Christian congregants, highlighting its inclusive nature. Over time, like many congregations, Washington Park Chapel saw its membership dwindle. From its peak of 100-200 members, the number slowly declined. In the words of Tom Luehrs, a long-time member and leader, the church was no longer being used to its full potential. Despite their commitment to justice and equity, the dwindling numbers prompted a difficult decision. In 2024, the congregation made the heartbreaking choice to sell. First the parking lot went, then the church itself. The building, which had grown over the years with an expansion in the 1950s, finally closed its doors. The 12,000-square-foot structure on its 0.4-acre plot became a symbol of change. While the physical Washington Park Chapel may be gone, its legacy lives on. It served as a reminder that community isn’t confined to bricks and mortar. It’s about the shared experiences, the connections forged, and the spirit of togetherness that endures even when a beloved landmark disappears.
