Look closely. This unassuming plaque commemorates the Washington Light Infantry. More than just a military unit this organization played a pivotal role in Charleston’s and the nation’s history. Founded in 1807 it’s one of the oldest militia groups still active in the United States.

Imagine Charleston in the early 19th century. Tensions with Great Britain remained high. Citizens formed private militias to protect their city. The Washington Light Infantry was among them named in honor of George Washington. They were initially mustered into service during the War of 1812 but saw no combat as Britain didn’t invade South Carolina.

However their story is far more extensive than just the War of 1812. In 1836 they fought in Florida against the Seminole Indians guarding St Augustine. Six years later they helped establish the South Carolina Military Academy now known as The Citadel. Their service extended to the Mexican-American War where they marched to Mexico City as part of the Palmetto Regiment.

The Civil War saw the Washington Light Infantry split into three companies serving the Confederacy. They suffered heavy losses. One hundred and fourteen men died fighting for their cause. But even after such devastation the Washington Light Infantry persevered.

After the war the survivors formed the Washington Light Infantry Charitable Association to support the families of fallen soldiers. This organization still exists as the WLI Charity Fund. They played a crucial role in reopening The Citadel in 1882 after it was closed following the war.

Their service continued. They were border guards during World War I and were involved in resolving a labor dispute between sailors and shipping companies in 1921. The Washington Light Infantry stands as a testament to unwavering service. This plaque is a small tribute to the men who served in this remarkable unit. They embody the spirit of Charleston. Their legacy continues to inspire us.
