Is it true that a park can resemble a dragon? Waryong Park is such a place. It is in Myeongnyun-dong. This park is in the Jongno District of Seoul. Waryong Park was founded in 1984.
Let’s explore Waryong Park together. The park is next to Bugaksan Mountain. People say it looks like a dragon lying down. Yong or Ryong means dragon in Korean. That is why it is called Waryong Park.
Imagine walking through Waryong Park. In 2023, the park got a makeover. Workers installed new safety railings. They also planted more flowers and trees. The park now feels even safer.
Waryong Park offers a peaceful escape. The name Waryong describes its shape. People visit to enjoy nature. The park provides beautiful views. It is a great place for a walk.
Now let’s talk more about Jongno District. It is home to other important places. Changdeokgung Palace is nearby. Many Joseon kings favored this palace. It has elements from the Three Kingdoms period. Changdeokgung blends with nature. This is different from Gyeongbokgung Palace.
Changdeokgung Palace was damaged during the Japanese occupation. Only about 30% of the original structures remain. Changdeokgung was built in 1405 and completed in 1412. King Seonjo expanded the palace grounds. This included Huwon.
The Japanese burned the palace to the ground in 1592. King Seonjo and King Gwanghaegun reconstructed it in 1609. King Injo burned it down again in 1623. Despite these disasters, it kept its original design. Changdeokgung was the royal court until 1868.
Korea’s last Emperor Sunjong lived here until he died in 1926. Parts of the palace were a royal residence until 1989. Princess Deokhye and Crown Princess Bangja lived here.
Today, 13 buildings remain. The gardens have 28 pavilions. The area is Historical Site No. 122. Donhwamun is a notable gate. It was built in 1412 and rebuilt in 1607. Injeongjeon Hall was used for coronations. Huijeongdang was the king’s private residence. Daejojeon was the queen’s living quarters.
Huwon is a 78-acre rear garden. It was for the royal family. It has a lotus pond and pavilions. There are over 26,000 trees in the garden. Some are over 300 years old. The garden was called Geumwon. High officials could not enter without permission. Koreans now call it Biwon.
Ongnyucheon has a U-shaped water channel. It was carved in 1636 for floating wine cups. It also has a small waterfall. Changdeokgung is a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. UNESCO praised its harmony with nature.
