In 1874, long before this sturdy brick building graced this spot, a simple brush arbor sheltered a dream. That dream, held by a group of newly emancipated Christians, was the foundation of Warren Memorial United Methodist Church. Their spirit, however, stretched back even further, to cottage meetings held in the heart of Bush Mountain. These devout souls, led by Reverend John Crolley, yearned for a place to call their own. Their first sanctuary, a humble one-room house, soon proved too small for their burgeoning congregation. They eventually settled into a frame structure at the corner of Humphries and Chapel Streets, christening it Chapel Street Church. It later became Warren Chapel Church. This name honored Bishop Henry White Warren, a Methodist Episcopal Bishop who arrived in Atlanta in 1831. Fire tragically ravaged the church in 1929. But from the ashes, a phoenix rose. The congregation, under the steadfast guidance of Reverend S.M. Miller, rebuilt and remodeled, their faith unshaken. The Warren Memorial United Methodist Church we see today, completed in 1942, stands as a testament to their enduring spirit. It’s a beacon of hope, a symbol of resilience, and a vibrant hub for the community. Its history whispers from these very walls.
