“The Castle of Your Dreams” Jack L Warner called it. Stand here before the Warner Grand Theater. Feel its grandeur.

This magnificent movie palace opened its doors on January 20 1931. It’s located in San Pedro a vibrant area of Los Angeles. The Warner Grand Theater is more than just a cinema. It’s a piece of history a cultural landmark. It’s a testament to the golden age of Hollywood.

Designed by architect B Marcus Priteca and interior designer Anthony Heinsbergen it boasts an Art Deco Moderne style. This architectural masterpiece was one of three such theaters built by Warner Bros in the early 1930s. The others in Beverly Hills and Huntington Park are sadly gone. Only the Warner Grand Theater in San Pedro remains largely intact. Priteca later designed the famous Pantages Theatre in Hollywood.

The Warner Grand Theater wasn’t always so well loved. By the mid-1990s neglect threatened its existence. Demolition loomed. But a dedicated group of San Pedro residents stepped in. They formed the Grand Vision Foundation. Their tireless efforts led to the City of Los Angeles purchasing the theater in 1996. The theater was saved.

The Warner Grand Theater’s interior is breathtaking. Imagine ornate wood carved ceilings a copper gold and silver sunburst design. Picture Art Deco tiles and lighting fixtures. The original plush velvet seats have seen better days though. During its time as the Teatro Juarez they were replaced with vinyl seating. The colors an homage to the Mexican flag.

Today the Warner Grand Theater thrives. It hosts a variety of events. Concerts dance musicals comedy and drama all find a home here. Of course film screenings are also frequent. The stage is surprisingly versatile. It measures 50 feet wide by 32 feet deep. A T-guided fly system ensures smooth transitions between acts.

The Warner Grand Theater has also starred in films. It appeared in Remote Control (1988) What’s Love Got to Do with It (1993) Pearl Harbor (2001) and Babylon (2022). It has also served as a filming location for numerous television shows and commercials.

The Warner Grand Theater continues its legacy. Thanks to the City of Los Angeles and the Grand Vision Foundation this historic movie palace shines. It’s a place where dreams are made and shared. A true Los Angeles treasure. It’s a “Castle of Your Dreams” indeed.
