Ever wonder what it was like to live in Charleston nearly a century ago? Today we are exploring Wappoo Heights. This historic neighborhood offers a glimpse into Charleston’s past. Wappoo Heights stands as a testament to classic Southern charm.
George Albert Nash established Wappoo Heights in 1924. It is the second oldest subdivision west of the Ashley River. Maryville was the first. Nash purchased 72 acres of marsh and high ground. This land was once part of the Crescent Plantation. The Olmsted Brothers later laid out the remainder of the plantation. It became known as The Crescent in 1926.
Originally named Azalea Drive, Formosa Drive is one of Wappoo Heights’ picturesque streets. Palmetto Road and Allgood Road add to the area’s inviting atmosphere. These streets create an idyllic setting. It is perfect for families and outdoor enthusiasts.
Imagine children crabbing in Wappoo Creek. They swam in a “croped” off area. They built tree houses in the grand old trees. Exploring the woods for the perfect Christmas cedar was a grand adventure. Wappoo Heights was somewhat isolated back then. This isolation fostered a strong community bond. That bond remains part of Wappoo Heights today.
Lots originally sold for $600 to $900. Mail was delivered to boxes lining the County Road. Lorena Nash’s mom paraded her children, dogs, cats, goats, and geese to get the mail. Neighborhood kids respected “Hector”. He was Colonel Goodwyn’s German Shepherd. Water service arrived in 1943. Raising chickens, cows, and growing vegetables were part of daily life.
One unique alarm clock story involves Lorena Nash. She tied a long string to her big toe. She placed the other end out the window. Friends would pull the string to wake her for early morning crabbing.
Wappoo Heights offers convenient access to the Wappoo Cut Boat Ramp. Residents can easily enjoy fishing and kayaking. Boaters have direct access to the Charleston Harbor and Intracoastal Waterway.
Many homes have been lovingly maintained and updated. Some offer stunning water and marsh views. The neighborhood provides tranquility and connectivity. It is located off Folly Road.
