Slipped between the Macau Peninsula and the mainland, lies Wanzai. It’s a place with a story as tangled as the waterways that surround it. Wanzai, once an island, now a peninsula, whispers tales of shifting borders and changing fortunes. Wanzai wasn’t always connected to the mainland. It was once Ilha da Lapa to the Portuguese, a separate entity with its own distinct identity. In the mid-1800s, the Portuguese, already established in Macau, extended their reach to Wanzai, claiming it as their own. This control, however, was short-lived. By 1887, Wanzai was relinquished, returning to Chinese authority. Imagine the lives lived on Wanzai during this tug-of-war between nations. A small Chinese population called this island home, their lives interwoven with the currents of Portuguese and Chinese influence. Missionaries sought refuge here, adding another layer to Wanzai’s cultural tapestry. A defensive battery, a manufacturing facility – remnants of a past striving for security and self-sufficiency, now absorbed into the larger narrative of Zhuhai. While no longer an island, the echoes of Wanzai’s past linger. The name itself, a whisper of what was, a reminder of a time when borders were fluid and fortunes as changeable as the tides. The ferries that once plied the waters between Macau and Wanzai speak of connection and separation, of trade and transition. Though the landscape has been reshaped, the spirit of Wanzai persists, a quiet testament to the ebb and flow of history.
