Whispers of fortunes carried on the East India trade winds reached the shores of Wanshan. It is 1799. The Wanshan Archipelago, also known as the Ladrones Archipelago, is about to witness a tense naval standoff. Wanshan, nestled near Macau, held a strategic position in the South China Sea. It was a key gathering point for the “China Fleet,” the annual convoy of East Indiamen laden with treasures from Canton. The British Royal Navy, aware of the immense value of this fleet, dispatched HMS Intrepid, under Captain William Hargood, to safeguard it. Reinforcements, HMS Virginie and HMS Arrogant, arrived at Wanshan on January 21st, bolstering the British presence. Just six days later, a formidable Franco-Spanish squadron, led by Rear-Admiral Ignacio Maria de Álava, appeared on the horizon. Their mission: to disrupt the British trade and seize the valuable convoy. The allied force, boasting two ships of the line and four frigates, outnumbered the British. Hargood, despite the odds, bravely steered his small squadron towards the enemy. A tense chase unfolded through the treacherous waters of the Wanshan Archipelago. Both sides later claimed the other had declined battle, the truth lost to the mists of time and conflicting reports. What is certain is that Álava’s squadron withdrew, leaving Hargood to successfully escort the China Fleet to safety. The Wanshan Incident, though bloodless, serves as a reminder of the high-stakes naval games played in these waters during a pivotal era of global trade and conflict.
