How about stepping back three centuries? The story of Wan’s Ancestral Hall is a compelling tale of heritage, community, and resilience.

Wan’s Ancestral Hall, a monument in Shenzhen’s Futian District, stood for 300 years. This ancestral hall was more than just a building. It was a spiritual center for villagers sharing a common ancestor and surname. These connections often extended to relatives living abroad. People believed ancestors’ spirits lived in these shrines. They extended blessings to those visiting them. Funerals and weddings were often celebrated here too.

The story took a dark turn when the ancestral hall faced demolition. This destruction stemmed from official disregard for spiritual traditions and land speculation. Imagine the shock and anger of the 4,000 villagers from Shuiwei and Huanggang. They confronted the police in protest. Some blocked the entrance of the C2 Shenzhen subway station. They held signs declaring their opposition. The signs demanded the preservation of their authentic ancestral hall. They felt the demolition disrespected their family and went against Heaven.

The villagers shared a complicated story. The old ancestral shrine had stood for 300 years. It hadn’t disturbed anyone. Yet, money seemed to be the primary motive for its destruction. A large real estate development project loomed. Authorities seemed willing to sacrifice historical buildings for profit.

There was another layer to the story. Huanggang and Shuiwei were once one village. Later, they became two autonomous villages. The villagers, mostly named Huang, believed they descended from the same ancestor. Those in Shuiwei accused CCP leaders in Huanggang of corruption. They believed the leaders surrendered rights to the old ancestral hall for profit. A new hall had been built. However, the people of Shuiwei felt the original belonged to both villages, not just Huanggang.

One man revealed the authorities’ perspective. They suppressed symbols of belief. They viewed ancestor veneration as superstition. Despite this, money remained the driving force.

Ancestral halls are particularly important in Shenzhen. Lineage and shared ancestry create strong bonds. During the Cultural Revolution, many ancestral halls were destroyed. They were seen as symbols of feudal superstition. Villagers had to fight to preserve their cultural and spiritual symbols. They faced the CCP’s disregard for spirituality and land speculation.

Though this destruction is a sorrowful event, it also reveals the strength and resilience of Shenzhen’s village communities. They are ready to stand up for their traditions and history. They are ready to preserve their cultural heritage for future generations. The story of Wan’s Ancestral Hall serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting traditions. It shows us the need to protect cultural heritage.
