Beyond the horizon, where France meets Belgium, lies the quaint commune of Wannehain. Wannehain is a place of subtle beauty and intriguing history. It’s nestled in the Nord department, a region known for its blend of French and Flemish influences. Wannehain’s history stretches back centuries. Traces of a Roman road, running from Hollain to Cysoing, still crisscross the commune. This whispers of a time when legions marched across this very land.

Wannehain, despite its proximity to Roman settlements, holds a Germanic name. This suggests a fascinating interplay of cultures during the Frankish era. The village church, dedicated to Saint Cecilia, adds another layer to this historical puzzle. Saint Cecilia’s patronage is unique in the former diocese of Tournai. This raises questions about Wannehain’s connection to Cysoing Abbey. The abbey received Saint Calixtus’s body in 654. Could there be a link between these two religious figures and the founding of Wannehain?

Wannehain’s story is also one of noble families and local power. The first known lord, Amaury de Wannehain, marked the beginning of a long line of seigneurs. The 12th century saw the de Wannehain family rise to prominence. Over the centuries, the seigneurie passed through various families. The de la Cessoye family held it in the 15th century, followed by the powerful de Landas family in the 16th. Marriages further intertwined Wannehain’s fate with the d’Ennetiéres and Lalaing families.

The HSL 1 railway line, a modern marvel of engineering, now cuts through Wannehain. This connects it to Brussels and the wider world. Yet whispers of its past still linger. The Grande Ferme, with its medieval-style entrance and brick buildings, is a testament to Wannehain’s agricultural heritage. The dates etched into the stone, 1630 and 1748, remind us of the generations who have toiled this land. The immense grange, built in 1773, with its magnificent timber frame, speaks volumes about the importance of farming in Wannehain’s history. A nearby motte, surrounded by the remnants of moats, hints at a possible 11th-century castle. This adds a touch of mystery to Wannehain’s story.

The Cense de la Bleuse Vache, another noteworthy farm, stands as a reminder of Wannehain’s rural character. The inscription above the archway, “Bernard Joseph Pollet, farmer at the Bleuse Vache in Wanain, anno 1774”, provides a glimpse into the lives of the people who called Wannehain home. A small chapel, with its 17th-century stone cross, evokes a sense of quiet devotion.

A poignant reminder of life’s fragility rests near the cemetery. An octagonal chapel marks the spot where Paul Hubert Dorchies, mayor of Wannehain and farmer of the Grande Ferme, met his untimely demise in a riding accident in 1817. Wannehain is more than just a commune. It is a tapestry woven with threads of ancient history, noble families, and the enduring spirit of its people.
