Crossing over Wanghe Bridge, did you ever imagine this vital artery of Beijing once started as a humble railway bridge? It wasn’t always the multi-layered marvel we see today. The Wanghe Bridge initially carried a simple railway line over the northeastern 4th Ring Road. This line connected to the now-abandoned Hepingli Railway Station. Imagine the chugging of steam engines where now sleek subway cars glide. In the early 2000s, Wanghe Bridge underwent a transformation. The city expanded and so did the bridge. It was widened to accommodate the Beijing Subway’s Line 13, the CityRail. The new tracks cleverly replaced the old railway line. Just a few years later, in 2002, another expansion took place, resulting in the impressive three-tiered structure we see today. Wanghe Bridge is a testament to smart urban planning. It’s a feat of engineering, rising above the busy 4th Ring Road below. Until 2004, Wanghe Bridge held another distinction. It marked the starting point of the Jingcheng Expressway, a vital route leading towards Laiguangying and on to Chengde in Hebei province. Now, the expressway begins slightly closer to the city center, at Taiyanggong on the 3rd Ring Road. But remnants of its former starting point are still visible here. Look closely and you can see how the expressway elegantly arches over the 4th Ring Road, merging seamlessly with the bridge’s complex network. Wanghe Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a transportation hub, a meeting point of roads and rails. Its three layers tell a story of progress. The underpass carries the steady flow of traffic on the 4th Ring Road. Above that, the Jingcheng Expressway speeds vehicles towards destinations beyond Beijing. And finally, a network of flyover bridges creates a third layer, connecting various routes in a beautifully complex dance of urban movement. Despite its complexity, traffic here is usually remarkably smooth. It is a testament to the bridge’s thoughtful design. And here’s a little trivia for you. Wanghe Bridge is designated as Exit 1 on the 4th Ring Road. This mirrors its former connection with the Jingcheng Expressway. It’s a small detail that echoes the bridge’s history as a gateway to places beyond the city.
