Lost for nearly a millennium, now rediscovered. This is the story of the Wangcong Temple. Chinese archaeologists unearthed this famous temple in Sichuan province. It had been hidden for almost a thousand years. The Fugan Temple, located in downtown Chengdu, was renowned. It stood from the Eastern Jin Dynasty to the Southern Song Dynasty.

Now, standing before Wangcong Temple, let’s delve into its history. The Wangcong Temple is located in Pixian County’s southwest suburbs. It is about 23 kilometers from Chengdu’s city center. This site features a tomb and temple. Both commemorate the two emperors of the ancient Shu Kingdom.

The Shu Kingdom moved its capital from Pixian to Chengdu 2,300 years ago. The temple and statues in the park honor Sichuan’s documented ancestors. Its history stretches back over 1,500 years. It is now a key historical site under state protection. Renovations across dynasties expanded the hall. It grew from 20 mu to over 80 mu.

Daoxuan, a Tang Dynasty monk, wrote about a rain prayer. The rite took place in front of the temple during a drought. Rain fell as if the prayers were answered. This event gave the temple its name, Fugan. Fugan means “perceive the blessing.” The Tang Dynasty poet Liu Yuxi wrote a poem. It commemorated the temple’s renovation, praising its beauty.

The building deteriorated during the later Tang and Song dynasties. Wars caused all traces of the temple to disappear. Archaeologists unearthed over 1,000 tablets. These had Buddhist scriptures. They also found 500 stone sculptures. Glazed tiles with inscriptions were discovered, too.

Yi Li led the excavation project. He stated that only a part of the temple area was excavated. Yet, they glimpsed its past glory. They found the temple’s foundation. Ruins of surrounding buildings, wells, roads, and ditches were uncovered. Near the temple, archaeologists found 80 ancient tombs. These tombs dated back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Large amounts of household tools, utensils, and building materials have been unearthed. They dated from the Song to Ming dynasties.

Chengdu became a western China economic and cultural center. This happened during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The temple’s discovery could greatly contribute to Buddhism study. This is according to Wang Yi, director of the Chengdu Cultural Relic Research Institute.

Today, there is a small museum here. It houses paintings and archaeological relics. These relics were unearthed in the Pixian area. A song contest is held at the Dragon Boat Festival. Scenic spots are nearby. They include the Ziyun Pavilion, the Tomb of Yang Xiong, and the Dujuan City Relics. There is also a teahouse, a lake, and pleasant walking paths.

As you wander through the Wangcong Temple, consider its journey. From a place of rain prayers to a hidden ruin. Now, it stands again, a testament to history. It is a place of remembrance and cultural significance. The Wangcong Temple connects us to ancient Sichuan.
