Look down. Notice the artistry beneath your feet. Right here in Freiburg we find a remarkable example of cobblestone mosaics. This isn’t just any pavement. It’s a piece of Freiburg’s history. These mosaics often tell a story. They might show symbols of trade or historical references to the buildings nearby. Some are purely ornamental. Others display emblems coats of arms or brand names.
The Wandmosaik Mosaic is a perfect example. It’s part of a tradition that goes back to at least 1858 when Alois Krems a paver living in Freiburg was inspired by his apprenticeship in southern France. His work helped define a unique style. During major road reconstructions between 1901 and 1911 many roads were repaved with cobblestone mosaics. These feature the year of construction. Even the bombing of Freiburg in 1944 couldn’t destroy this legacy. Many mosaics survived.
The tradition revived during the 1970s. The old city became a pedestrian zone. This created many opportunities for new mosaics. Kaiser-Joseph-Strasse Freiburg’s main shopping street received red porphyry pavements. They are decorated with bands of white marble and smaller Rhine cobbles. Larger Rhine cobbles also paved the Minster square.
Creating these mosaics is skilled work. The cobbles are cut and trimmed. They need to be 6 to 12 cm long and 2 to 3 cm wide. Their depth must be at least two-thirds their length. They are set into the ground with their flat side up. For complex designs like our Wandmosaik Mosaic wooden stencils and steel ladles filled with mortar are used. This method allows for pre-assembly. The finished mosaics weighing about 400 kg are then installed. Freiburg even gave mosaics showing its coat of arms to its sister cities.
