Then came William Ward a prominent Oxford Alderman and twice Mayor. He decided to commemorate the spring’s importance. Ward commissioned the fountain. He wanted a lasting tribute. He chose the Neo-Baroque style. He hired the talented Harry Wilkinson Moore an Oxford architect. The fountain was carved in Portland stone. McCulloch of London handled the delicate craftsmanship.

The inscription on the Walton Well Drinking Fountain is itself a story. It reads Drink and think of him who is the fountain of life. The words encircle a central message. This drinking fountain is erected by Mr William Ward to mark the site of a celebrated spring. It also marks the location of the ancient fordway called Walton Ford. The fountain even has the consent of the Lords of the Manor.
