Did you know Waltershofen boasts a history stretching back to 1139? That’s right. This charming village nestled at the foot of the Tuniberg has witnessed centuries unfold. Waltershofen’s story is one of transitions. From its early mention in official documents to its time under the rule of various noble families like the Schnewlins and the Dachswangers it’s a rich tapestry. These families held sway over Waltershofen until the end of the 15th century. Financial struggles forced the St Margen cloister to relinquish its ownership. Then various aristocratic families governed until 1806. That year Waltershofen became part of Baden. It finally joined Baden-Württemberg in 1952. In 1972 it became part of Freiburg im Breisgau.

But let’s not forget the heart of Waltershofen its magnificent St Peter and Paul church. This architectural gem stands proudly in the village center. Architect Christoph Arnold built it between 1816 and 1819 in the Weinbrenner style. A fascinating fact is that the church’s location holds significance. It sits on the very spot where a St Margarete chapel once stood from around 1270. This new church replaced the church in neighboring Wippertskirch which had served as the church for the Schuttern cloister in Waltershofen. The move was made in 1815.

Waltershofen’s story isn’t just about its past. Today this vibrant community thrives. It’s known for its beautiful setting on the Tuniberg. The area invites relaxing strolls and extended hikes.
