Did Walter Reed ever imagine his name gracing a middle school? Here we stand, before Walter Reed Middle School, a landmark in Studio City, Los Angeles. Established in 1939, Walter Reed Middle School wasn’t always known by this name. Originally, it was North Hollywood Junior High School. Later, it was renamed to honor the U.S. Army Major Walter Reed. The school, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, serves students from 6th to 8th grade. Its motto: “Be safe, Be responsible, Be respectful” echoes through the hallways. Walter Reed Middle School isn’t just a place of learning. It’s a frequent backdrop for Hollywood. TV shows like “Head of the Class,” “Growing Pains,” “Malcolm in the Middle,” “The West Wing,” and even “Young Sheldon” have filmed scenes here. Movies like “License to Drive,” “The Shaggy Dog,” and “Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster” also used the school as a location. In 2006, a single day of filming here cost $2,500. This school also has a rich academic history. It’s home to the Individualized Honors Program, often called the IHP. Time magazine once praised the IHP as “perhaps the most successful junior-high curriculum in the U.S.” Founded in 1971 by William Fitz-Gibbon, this program caters to gifted students. It allows them to remain with their social peers while tackling advanced coursework. Beyond academics, Walter Reed Middle School has faced challenges. In 2017, budget cuts hit the school due to a state law based on the percentage of white students. More recently, in 2024, a concerning incident occurred. Seventeen students required medical evaluation after consuming a banned substance. Two students even needed hospitalization. Walter Reed Middle School stands as a testament to its namesake, a place where education and history intersect with the world of entertainment.
