Settlement began here in the late 1830s. In 1880 the community became Wallis station. It was later shortened to Wallis. This happened after a rail company executive made it so. We are standing in front of the Wallis State Bank Plaque.

The population grew. New residents and businesses came to Wallis. The community needed a bank. In January 1906, the Wallis State Bank was established. The capital investment was $10,000. D.N. Harris, F.D. Brandt, and J.H. Thompson were some of the founders. R.W. Thompson, J.F. Walters, L. Tillotson and W.A. Matthaei also helped. Harris was the bank’s first president. Matthaei was secretary. O.R. Prouty was the first Cashier.

The Wallis State Bank began operations at this site. In 1912, the company built a two-story brick building. It replaced the original small frame structure. The board of directors leased parts of the second floor. The justice of the peace and a masonic lodge used it. In 1918, the local economy grew. A second bank was created. It was called the Guaranty State Bank of Wallis. It merged with Wallis State Bank in 1927.

In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, Wallis State Bank expanded. It opened branches of another banking institution. The bank constructed new facilities here. Bank records show how business was done in small town Texas. Loans were secured by tractors. Cows and horses were also used as collateral. For over 100 years, the Wallis State Bank has served Wallis residents. It represents local strength and security.
