Waller Baptist Church

A curious sight greeted the townsfolk of Waller in 1896. A long, white church building stood proudly on the land, presumably donated by C. C. Waller himself. This was the first official home of Waller Baptist Church. The church’s story began a few years earlier, in the early 1890s. A small Sunday school class, led by Miss Nettie Collins, gathered in a one-room schoolhouse. This simple gathering blossomed into Waller Baptist Church under the leadership of J. E. McClurkin. By 1894, the church boasted a membership of 57 souls. The new church building, dedicated in 1896, was a beacon of faith. Its steeple housed a large bell, its ringing a call to worship. In those early days, the church lacked a baptistry. New believers were baptized in a nearby stock tank, a testament to their commitment. Waller Baptist Church continued to grow. In 1915, a more modern building replaced the original structure. This new building, constructed debt-free under George N. Cook’s guidance, featured a sunken baptistry right in front of the pulpit. The church thrived in its new home. Christmas Day, 1949, marked another milestone. A new two-story red brick building was dedicated. This festive occasion, however, was later overshadowed by tragedy. On March 1, 1965, a devastating fire consumed the building. Nothing was salvaged. The cause of the fire remains a mystery to this day. One member lamented the helplessness of watching their beloved church burn. Undeterred, the congregation held services at Waller High School. They immediately launched a building program for their current sanctuary. This building, dedicated on September 25, 1966, stands as a symbol of their resilience. The following month, the church library opened its doors under Orline Bunting’s direction. The library continues to serve the community, with LeVelle Calbat at the helm since 1994. Waller Baptist Church has always been more than just a building. It’s a hub of community service. From its “Mission Closet and Pantry” in 1985, which later merged into Waller Assistance and Restoration Ministry (W.A.R.M.), to blood drives and holiday events, the church has consistently served those in need. It has hosted Vacation Bible School, Easter Egg Hunts, Fall Festivals, Turkey Giveaways, Bethlehem Boulevard, Christmas In A Barn, and offered scholarships and support to graduating seniors. Under Dr. Charles Wisdom’s leadership, the church acquired 44 acres of land on FM 362 South for future expansion. Through the congregation’s generosity, the note for the property was quickly paid off, a testament to their faith. The land was dedicated in a special service under a “big tent” on April 27, 2008. Today, Waller Baptist Church continues its mission to “love God, connect others, and make a difference,” a legacy built on faith, resilience, and community service.
